For group projects

A group report where everyone knows their part

Paste the brief, give each person a part, and see who's doing what without asking in the group chat. The whole group is free.

Kit: Group report

A group report's brief pasted in: its numbered items found, ready to become the draft plan's parts.

The problem

The group chat isn't a plan

Four people, eight weeks, one brief. Someone starts a shared document, someone else a chat, and by week five nobody knows who's writing the method, whether the sources are checked, or why one person is doing half the work.

How Belaywork handles it

  • Paste the brief

Its numbered items or “Step 1” headings become the parts and the items under them tasks, and it's kept as a checklist: the Overview says whether every item is covered by a part. A mid-point hand-in becomes a checkpoint, and items that start with “Choose” or “Decide” become decisions the parts after them wait for.

  • Divide it fairly

Put a name on each task, so the research splits into one topic per person. Suggestions come from people's strengths and the hours they say they can give, each with its reason, and the People page shows when someone has more than their hours suggest.

  • Review each other's parts

When a part is ready, its owner asks someone to look. They say it looks good, or ask for changes with one issue per thing to fix, and the issues stay in sight until they're resolved.

  • Research side by side, writing in order

In the Group report kit, the research runs side by side with one topic each, and the writing goes in order, starting the outline while the research is still running. A part that waits for another says “Can't start yet”, and the Timeline shows where the work meets: the mid-point and the deadline.
