Parts that wait for others
Say that a part can't really start until another is done. It's a reminder, not a lock.
What it does
A part can wait for up to eight other parts of the same project, such as “Writing waits for Understand the brief”. While any of them isn't done, the part shows Can't start yet and what it waits for, in the plan, on the part's page and in Today.
A reminder, not a lock
Nothing is blocked: tasks in a waiting part can still be ticked. But your next step skips them, so you're pointed at work you can do now.
Setting it
Choose Waits for… in a part's menu in the plan, or change it on the part's page. Whoever shapes the plan can change it. A part can't wait for one that already waits for it, so a loop is never possible.
Order inside a part
Waits for is between parts. Inside a part, choose Do the tasks in order: the tasks are numbered and only the next one is live, with nothing to set up between them.
When you can start
When the last part it waits for is done, the part's owners get one notification, “You can start …”, and the part shows up in their Today.
From kits and briefs
Kits come with waits that make sense: in Group report, Research and Writing wait for Understand the brief; in Client project, each part waits for the one before. Decisions in a brief make the parts after them wait. In the draft plan they're ticked and you can untick them, and dates counted back from the deadline start a waiting part after what it waits for.
